Where to take the best photos at Istanbul Aquarium

The five spots

1. The underwater tunnel (large ocean section, about two-thirds through). Sharks and rays overhead; stand off the moving walkway at the tunnel's midpoint and shoot upward. Wait for the shark to pass across the brightest part of the ceiling.
2. The Red Sea reef (zone 8). The most colourful tank: corals, clownfish, lionfish. Shoot straight on, lens against the acrylic to kill reflections.
3. The rainforest bridge (zone 9). Green canopy, the crocodile pool below, birds. This is the one spot with warm light and a "landscape" feel; a wide phone lens works.
4. The penguin window (zone 13). Underwater viewing panel; gentoos swim past fast, so use burst mode. Above water, feeding time gives the classic shot.
5. The big Pacific tank (zone 17). The last and largest wall of water; silhouettes of visitors against the blue are the popular Instagram frame.

Phone settings that actually help

• Turn flash off and leave it off.
• Press the lens against the acrylic or shade it with your hand; most bad aquarium photos are reflections.
• Use burst for fish and penguins.
• Lock exposure on the tank, not on the dark room, then tap to focus on the animal.
• For the tunnel, video beats stills: a 10-second clip of a ray passing over is the shot everyone keeps.

Rules

Personal photography is fine. No flash, no tripods, and no drones (obviously). Commercial shoots need permission from the aquarium's press office. Respect the "no tapping on the glass" signs; staff will ask you to stop.

The official photography service

Near the entrance a photographer takes a green-screen portrait, which is composited onto an underwater scene and printed for collection at the exit. It is included in the Premium and Full packages on the official price list and sold on its own at the desk. Worth it for a family souvenir; skip it if you only want your own shots.

Timing

Arrive at 10:00 on a weekday and the tunnel is empty for the first half hour. By weekend mid-afternoon it is a slow queue with people in every frame. See opening hours and quiet times.

A note on the images in this guide

We use one licensed photograph of the aquarium on this site and describe the rest. We do not publish generated or borrowed images of the tanks, because what is in a specific tank changes and we would rather you see it in person than be disappointed by a picture from another year.
